Asthma, also known as ‘swas roga’ in Ayurveda, is a chronic disorder of the lungs. Here, ‘swas’ means breathing and ‘roga’ means disorder. According to Ayurveda, the impure ‘Pranvayu’ (vital energy) together with ‘kapha (water) dosa’ causes accumulation of water in the lungs, thereby causing asthma.
In Ayurveda, asthma or swas roga is categorized into 5 types – Maha swas, Urdha swas, Chinna swas, Tamak swas and Ksudra swas. Among these, the first three types are incurable, the second last is difficult to cure and the last, ie. Ksudra swas is curable.
How Ayurveda Treats Asthma?
Depending on the imbalance of particular dosha, treatment is determined. Eg., cardiac asthma is linked with imbalance in pitta(fire) whereas people suffering from vata dosa can suffer from wheezing, dry cough, dry skin, constipation, etc.
