Indigestion or dyspepsia is an extremely common condition and is best described as an uncomfortable feeling of fullness, acid reflux, heart burn, flatulence, sour burping etc. It is a temporary condition and can be a symptom of a digestive ailment but not an ailment itself. It is mostly caused when there is an excess production of the stomach acid. This acid is hydrochloric acid and is needed to break down food.

    Baking soda

  • A glass of water with a tablespoon of baking soda can bring in immediate relief.
  • Having two glasses of luke warm water in times of indigestion. This may help dilute the stomach acid and reduce symptoms.
  • Do not drink water until about 15 minutes after the meal. This helps the enzymes and the acids work properly on the food being ingested. Eat slowly and chew food well.
  • Stop the intake of caffeine based drinks like tea or coffee.
  • A half glass of pineapple juice taken after meals helps cure indigestion. This is because the enzyme bromelain found in pineapple aids digestion.
  • Caraway or ajwain seeds

  • Boil a cup of water and put a tablespoon of ajwain or caraway seeds in it. Turn off the heat. Let it steep and cool off. Strain and have small sips of the water before and after meals. It is an excellent remedy for indigestion. A teaspoon of the same seeds along with a little rocksalt can do wonders.
  • A teaspoon of lemon juice or cider vinegar in a glass of water taken before meals can relieve indigestion.It creates an acidic enviroment in the stomach and is believed to curb the over secretion of the gastric acid.
  • Drink buttermilk immediately after a meal. The probiotics in it will aid in digestion.
  • Having ginger infused green tea can help.
  • Take equal parts of water and carrot juice.
  • Keep ice bag on stomach for 30 minutes after a meal.
  • Peppermint is very beneficial for digestion. Having peppermint tea will help with digestion.
  • No Smoking

  • Stop smoking and stay away from alcohol.
  • Stay away from acidic foods and food which has a high amount of saturated fats and trans fats. Bakery items, deep fried food etc should be avoided.
  • Do not rest or go to bed immediately after a meal.
  • Try including exercise in your daily routine.
  • Eat a lot of fiber to ensure that your bowels are emptied regularly. Constipation further aggravates the symptoms of indigestion.
  • Add three drops of garlic oil into a cup of soya oil and massage on the stomach area after meals.
