What Is Severe Indigestion?

Severe indigestion or the bad indigestion is usually caused by quick stomach expansion. This stomach expansion can be caused by overfilling. This occurs when you have eaten food in big amount and too quickly. This creates pressure in the stomach and causes the stomach acids to rise up into the esophagus. Discomfort feeling and stomach pain can last up to hours until all of the food is digested properly.

Ulcers can also cause severe indigestion. The pain in this situation is different from the pain usually occurring in ulcers. Severe indigestion can be the first symptom of food poisoning. Medical advice becomes necessary when you experience nausea, faintness, chills, vomiting, diarrhea or sweating along with bad indigestion. Dehydration is caused due to food poisoning, hence it is necessary to hydrate your body with fluids.

Severe Indigestion Symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite and distasteful meals
  • Heaviness and pain in stomach
  • Bubbling sound in stomach
  • Tiredness and dizziness feeling
  • Water in mouth
  • Sleeplessness
  • Bad breath

Causes Of Severe Indigestion:

  • Eating quickly without chewing properly is the main cause of Indigestion
  • Consuming heavy and oily food in large quantity
  • Taking stale food
  • Contaminated and rotten food

Other causes of Indigestion are-

  • Eating without hunger
  • Frequent eating
  • Mental stress
  • Eating in tensed or agitated state of mind
  • State of fear and panic also causes indigestion

Treatment of Severe Indigestion:

There are a variety of natural remedies to treat severe indigestion-

  • Peppermint- it can be taken in tablet or tea form. It relieves stomach of gas and cramps. Adding lemon to tea is also helpful.
  • Chamomile tea-it has anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and gas-relieving effects. It soothes indigestion. Adding honey can be helpful.
  • Slippery elm bark- in the form of tablet and tea. It forms a protective coating on the stomach.
  • Ginger- in the form of tea reduces pain and bloating.
  • Avoiding the food that causes indigestion is the best way to treat indigestion.
  • Antacids also helps to cure indigestion and heartburn.
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking and excess caffeine drinks also prevent severe indigestion.
