What Causes Pregnancy Indigestion?

Indigestion is also called as dyspepsia. Indigestion is a common problem in pregnant women. It accompanies painful burning sensation in the upper abdomen. It generally occurs due to overeating, eating too fast, eating fatty and spicy foods, alcohol, smoking, not drinking enough water, depression and stressful conditions.

Indigestion problem occurs because of excess stomach acid production. The stomach contents are thrown up into the esophagus. Digestive disorders frequently occur in 50 percent of pregnant women. Hormonal changes during pregnancy causes indigestion in pregnant women. The problem of indigestion is harmless and temporary and eases once the child is born.

Pregnancy Indigestion Causes:

  • The condition of indigestion is common in pregnant women.
  • The problem of indigestion occur in the middle and later periods of pregnancy in women.
  • It occurs during pregnancy because there are several hormonal changes relaxing the digestive tract muscle.
  • It also happens because there is a pressure on the stomach due to the growing uterus.
  • Indigestion can cause weak digestive system and causing improper digestion of food.

Symptoms Of Pregnancy Indigestion:

  • Indigestion shows the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, bloating, burping, flatulence and heartburn. It also shows the symptom of constipation and diarrhea.
  • The first trimester can show nausea and vomiting symptoms.
  • Second trimester , the women feels better.
  • During third semester, she begins to get indigestion. This is common condition, but very uncomfortable.

Treatment Of Pregnancy Indigestion:

  • Eat balanced diet and avoid citrus juices, caffeine drinks and chocolates.
  • Avoid spicy and fatty foods.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Antacid- take few Tums as it is safe to take during pregnancy.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Local walk is must after every meal which increases the body’s ability to digest food properly.
  • Eat six smaller and frequent meals a day than three big meals a day.
  • Papaya is the best fruit that contains natural digestive enzyme papain. This would digest food after each meal.
  • Peppermint tea is also helpful in indigestion.
  • Head and upper body should be elevated so that the acidic content should not back up into the esophagus.
