Intestinal Bloating- Causes And Treatment

Intestinal bloating or gas can be very embarrassing and uncomfortable. Bloating is one of the most common problem digestive problem among people. Excess gas can be felt as discomfort, pressure and bloating in the intestine and stomach. This excess gas becomes difficult to expel as the gas bubbles get trapped in the intestine and stomach.

There are several factors for the gas to develop in the stomach and digestive tract. It can be due to swallowing air, some foods and beverages, poor muscle tone, chewing gum, smoking and even due to wearing tight clothes. Typically, it occurs after eating excess food or too much of certain foods that leads to intestinal problems.

Causes Of Bloating:

Bloating can be caused by some foods, beverages and artificial sweeteners. Some causes leading to gas trouble are-

  • Dairy products

    – some people are unable to digest milk, it causes bloating.

  • Unabsorbed food

    – failure to digest foods is one of the main causes of bloating. Artificial sweeteners as Sorbitol present in sugar free gum and other products causes unabsorption of food.

  • Wheat intolerance

    – some people are unable to digest wheat, it causes gas formation and fermentation.

  • Carbonated drinks

    – this can cause bloating due to carbon dioxide bubbles. This causes gas formation. Straw sipping can cause even more gas formation as more air can enter the digestive tract.

  • Fructose

    – it is present in fruits and cause digestive problems. Some fruit products containing lactose can also cause bloating.

  • Aerophagia

    – is a gas problem experienced by women having their menstrual period.

  • Digestive imbalance

    – like low stomach acids, digestive enzymes, stress, food intolerances and poor gut mobility can cause bloating.

  • Gas producing foods

    – as baked beans, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chewing gum, candy and lettuce cause excess gas.

How To Control Bloating:

  • Drink water
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Eat more fiber
  • Exercise
  • Control sodium intake
