What is the Treatment of Gastroparesis ?

Gastroparesis can not be cured completely as it is a chronic condition. Only symptomatic treatment is provided.

Treatment for Gastroparesis

Medicines for treating gastroparesis are given either singularly or in combination. The side effects are taken into consideration before prescribing the medication. The treatment for gastroparesis include the following medication:

Metoclopramide (Reglan):

It stimulates abdominal muscles to promote emptying. The symptoms of nausea and vomiting are also addressed with this drug. It is taken half an hour before the meals. However it causes depression related problems such as fatigue and anxiety and also difficulty in moving.

The erythromycin also helps in contraction of stomach muscles and thus facilitates normal passage of the food. However erythromycin leads to cramps of the abdominal muscles and causes nausea and vomiting.

it works similar to that of Metoclopramide (Reglan). However Food and Drug Administration of USA is restricting its uses within USA.

Other medication used for Gastroparesis

Other medication used for symptomatic treatment of gastroparesis include the following:

  • Antiemetic for treating nausea and vomiting
  • Antibiotics to control the bacterial infection
  • Endoscope to inject and dissolve the medication into the body

Dietary Changes For Dealing with Gastroparesis

The dietician generally advices the patient to take small meals for 5 to 6 times a day so that it becomes easy for the stomach to empty the food. Apart from this the patients are also advised against taking diet high on lipids because lipids take more time to get digested, which is obviously not helpful to the patient suffering from gastroparesis. Avoid fibre too- especially oranges and broccoli- which are not totally digested and form bezoars (solid masses of food), characteristic symptom the disease.

Feeding Tube

If the advised dietary changes do not work then the a surgical procedure called jejunostomy is performed where in a feeding tube is inserted directly either through skin or abdominal into the small intestine. special liquid food is given through this tube. The food directly absorbed into the blood stream easily by this method. However it is carried out only in sever cases, that too in patients suffering from diabetes, to stabilise blood glucose levels.

Parenteral Nutrition

(delivering nutrients directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive) system

Gastric Electrical Stimulation

( implanted battery-operated device) ,

Botulinum Toxin

are other methods that are used for treating symptomatic treatment of gastroparesis
