What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is a liver disease that results due to the swelling of the liver. It is the inflammatory disease associated with liver. The important forms of hepatitis include the hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Hepatitis A:

Usually occurs through contaminated food and water. The food is contaminated by the fecal matter containing the hepatitis virus.

Hepatitis B:

Hepatitis B results due to the infection spread through the body fluids such as semen, and blood. Sexual act done without proper protections spreads the disease from the infected partner top the healthy partner. It is transmitted from the affected mother to the child.

Hepatitis C:

Hepatitis spreads through blood. Contact with infected drug needles and using the infected syringes with the infected needles are the usual sources of infection.

How Does One Know that He/ She have Hepatitis?

The following are the pertinent symptoms of hepatitis:

  • Tiresomeness
  • Feeling of illness in the stomach
  • Fever
  • Decreased appetite
  • Gastric pain
  • Diarrhoea

The following symptoms are present in some people but are absent in others.

  • Dark-yellow urine
  • Light-colored stools
  • Yellowish eye

Treatment for Hepatitis

People infected with hepatitis A virus get well on their own in due course.

Hepatitis B and hepatitis C though are treated with medicines.

Persistent Hepatitis though leads to permanent liver failure and warrants liver transplantation

Protective Measures Against Hepatitis

Hepatitis A can be prevented by regular washing of hands before meals and after passing the stools.

Vaccination exists for protection the people against hepatitis.

Hepatitis B can be prevented by using condom at the time of intercourse.

Hepatitis C has no vaccine. Protect yourself against the contact of blood by wearing the gloves. Do not share the razors, brushes etc., with others.
