Lactose intolerance in babies refers to the situation when the baby is unable to digest sugar lactose because of the deficiency of the enzyme, lactase. Lactose is present in milk and milk-based products. This lactose is further broken down into glucose and galactose by lactase enzyme. Thus, the enzyme lactase, produced in the small intestine, plays an important role in the digestion of lactose. Lactose indigestion in babies is primarily caused due to the deficiency of enzyme lactase. However, this condition is rare in children below 2 years.

Causes of lactose intolerance in babies

The following factors are responsible for the lactose intolerance in babies:

  • Deficiency of lactase
  • Damage or injury to the small intestine
  • Certain illnesses like Celiac disease, Diarrhea, Crohn’s disease etc.
  • Congenital factor
  • Hereditary

Symptoms of lactose intolerance in babies

The signs of lactose intolerance in babies can manifest within an hour of the consumption of milk or dairy products. They can range from mild to severe. Some common signs are:

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Gas
  • Spitting up
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Crying after having milk or milk products
  • Eczema
  • Ear infections

Consult a doctor immediately if you notice any of the above symptoms.

Treatment for lactose intolerance in babies

Lactose-free diet:

The common treatment for lactose intolerance is to go for lactose-free diet. However, the diet should contain the recommended levels of calcium or calcium supplements necessary for the body.

Partially digested products:

Including partially digested products is a new approach to treat lactose intolerance. You may have yogurt, cheese etc., in the diet.

Lactose-free formula:

If your baby is suffering from lactose intolerance, you may go for lactose-free formula to handle the situation.
