Perforated Ulcer: What are the Perforated Ulcer Symptoms and Causes?

Perforated ulcer or peptic ulcer is a condition when an ulcer leaves a hole in the esophagus, stomach wall and small intestine. The food content, blood and the stomach acid leak and enter the abdomen. This causes inflammation of the stomach. This might also lead to an infection in the stomach. It is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical help

Perforated Ulcer Symptoms

The perforated ulcer symptoms that should ring a warning bell are:

Pain:

Abdominal pain is the most common perforated ulcer symptom. The patient might notice a burning sensation or pain in the abdominal area. Usually, the pain occurs in the morning or in between the meals. The frequency and the severity of the pain may vary.

Other perforated ulcer symptoms are:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bleeding in the stools

Perforated Ulcer Causes

Untreated Ulcer:

People who suffer from untreated ulcers are at a higher risk of developing perforated ulcer.

Bacterium:

The major cause of perforated ulcer is the bacterial infection. The bacterium helicobacter pylori is responsible for this infection and also for nearly 60% of stomach ulcers.

Trauma:

Some internal trauma or stomach disease might also cause perforated ulcer.

Anti-inflammatory medicines:

Around 50% of perforated ulcers are said to be caused due to anti-inflammatory medicines.

Stomach cancer:

Stomach cancer can also trigger perforated ulcers. This usually occurs in older people.

Family history:

People with a family history of ulcers are more susceptible to perforated ulcers.

Other factors that might cause perforated ulcer are:

  • Stress
  • Obesity
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking

The condition of perforated ulcer can be rectified by following a strict diet and medications. Severe cases might require surgical removal of the ulcer.

  1. i had an ulcer last year because i am fond of skipping meals and working too hard. it was quite painful`.-

  2. believe me, ulcer is quite painful and its symptoms are not very good
