Pancreatitis Treatment – Acute Pancreatitis, Chronic Pancreatitis Treatment

Pancreas

is a large gland that plays vital role in digestion. It is located behind the stomach, close to the duodenum. It is about 7 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. Normally, the pancreas look yellowish green in color. It secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum.

Pancreatitis

is an abnormal condition of the pancreas where it is inflamed due to some reasons. There are two types of pancreatitis:

Acute

and

Chronic.

In acute pancreatitis, the inflammation occurs in a sudden, unexpected way. It lasts only for some time. In chronic pancreatitis, the inflammation lasts for a long time.

Treatment of Acute Pancreatitis

Acute pancreatitis is treated by hospitalization. The choice of the treatment depends on the severity of the attack. The patient needs the supervision of a doctor to avoid life threatening complications of acute pancreatitis. Here are steps in treating pancreatitis:

  • The doctor asks the patient to take complete rest, stopping eating and drinking.

    Intravenous fluids

    and

    medications

are administered to relieve the abdominal pain and other symptoms of acute pancreatitis like nausea and vomiting.

  • For patients having trouble breathing, oxygen is supplied using oxygen cylinders.
  • The doctor gives antibiotics if he suspects any infection in the body.
  • Sometimes, the patient may need a nasogastric tube to suck out problematic stomach juices. This suction helps the stomach to rest and pancreas to recover.
  • Nutritional supplements are administered intravenously in cases where the attack lasts more than 2 days.

Treatment of Chronic Pancreatitis:

  • Chronic pancreatitis needs to be treated according to the severity and complications. The patient should avoid alcohol and make some changes in the diet.
  • If the patient has abnormal secretions of insulin, insulin medications and shots are given to regulate the blood sugar.
  • The doctor may prescribe

    pancreatic replacement therapy

that requires the patient to take an enzyme preparation at every meal.

  • In some cases,

    surgery

is required to remove damaged pancreatic tissue or repair enlarged pancreatic duct.
