Intestinal gas

is one of the by-products of digestion. It is made up of vapors of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and sometimes methane. The gas is primarily odorless. The unpleasant odor of flatulence comes from the bacteria in the large intestine which decomposes the intestinal stuff by releasing small amounts of gases that contain sulfur.

Normal and Abnormal Intestinal Gas

It is quite normal for people to produce about 1 to 4 pints of intestinal gas in a day. Most people pass gas about 14 times a day. Although having this much intestinal gas is normal, it can be embarrassing and uncomfortable if the limit crosses. Excess intestinal gas is observed in following conditions:

Foods that cause excessive intestinal gas:

Foods that are rich in carbohydrates cause more intestinal gas. Fats and proteins cause little or no gas in the intestines. Following foods should not be taken when one has excess intestinal gas:

  • Whole grains, such as whole wheat and bran
  • Soft drinks and fruit drinks
  • Milk and milk products, such as cheese and ice cream
  • Packaged foods prepared with lactose, such as bread and salad dressing
  • Vegetables such as cabbage, onions, broccoli and asparagus
  • Soft drinks and fruit drinks
  • Foods containing sorbitol, such as sugar-free candies and gums
  • Fruits such as apples, pears, and peaches
  • Beans
