Post Cholecystectomy Diet

A proper diet is required after undergoing cholecystectomy to avoid further problems related to bile. Cholecystectomy surgery is suggested only when the gall bladder is damaged excessively or there is excessive formation of gallstones. Some people cannot receive long term relief even after the surgery. Some symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating, indigestion and abdominal pain can be suppressed.

It is estimated that 4 out of 10 people develop the similar problem even after the surgery. The reason behind this is not the gall bladder but the diet one takes. Following a proper diet after the surgery is the most effective way to prevent the recurring problem.

Foods to Eat after Cholecystectomy

Diet that helps the liver in digestion and makes the digestion process easier is to be taken. The foods that can be taken in the diet are:

  • Foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids such as hemp seed oil, olive oil and flax seed oil can be taken regularly. These are to be taken either in salad dressings or supplements. They remove the unhealthy cholesterol, harmful substances and other toxins from the body.
  • Vinegar and lemon juice are also effective when taken after the surgery. The acid content in them helps to break the fatty foods to simpler components.
  • Add 2 teaspoons of olive oil to a glass of lemon juice. Consume this every morning and evening.
  • Consume plenty of vegetables and fruits such as artichokes, berries, apples, grapes, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, beets and avocados. These provide the nutrients the body requires and fiber that helps in digestion.
  • Foods such as cottage cheese, fish and yogurt are very beneficial.
  • Introduce foods such as eggs, poultry, low-fat milk and whole grains in the diet as the days pass after the surgery.

Foods to Avoid after Cholecystectomy

Digestion becomes a problem with removal of gall bladder. The liver on its own has to perform the work to break down the fats in the digestion process. Hence, the foods that cannot be digested quickly are to be avoided. The following foods are to be avoided in the diet after undergoing cholecystectomy.

  • Soft drinks
  • Spicy foods
  • Fried foods
  • Foods that contain hydrogenated oils
  • Processed foods
  • Minimize the intake of refined carbohydrates, chocolates, dairy, poultry and pork
  • Red meat

A strict diet including the above mentioned foods helps in quick recovery from the surgery and covers the problems of bile imbalance. This is the only way to return and move on with a normal life.
