Yoga for Indigestion

Yoga is very beneficial and excellent remedy for indigestion and all the related medical conditions of digestive system. The postures of yoga are to be followed with attention in order to avoid all the symptoms related to indigestion.

How Yoga Relieves Indigestion

The major advantages of yoga is that it delimits the flow of blood to some body parts while practising some postures. After the postures are set free, the body parts receive over supply of blood followed by adequate oxygen. Oxygen is required for proper organ functioning and hence is very helpful.

An other advantage of yoga is breathing. It is called as pranayama. In some yogic postures, you need to breath forcibly into your bellies. This helps in opening the blocked areas of energy in the stomach and intestine that is a common cause of digestion problems.

Yogic Postures for Healthy Digestion

Standing Postures –

All types of standing postures can be practised for digestive problems. The standing postures include:

  • Ustrasana or Camel Pose
  • Half Moon Pose or Balancing Half Moon or Crescent Moon Pose
  • Parsvakonansa or Extended Side Angle Pose
  • Trikonasana and Parvritta Trikonasana (Triangle and Rectangle Triangle)

Inverted Postures –

Inverted yoga postures are beneficial for healthy digestion, inner well being and overall health. These postures are more helpful when you suffer from constipation, gas trouble or stomach pain. These are sophisticated postures that include back-bends and arm balancing. Any posture that is done above the level of heart are inversions. Inversions for indigestion include:

  • Sarvangasana + all its variations or Shoulder stand
  • Sirsasana or Head stand

Some other Yogic Postures for Indigestion –

These include all bends and forward folds. The postures are:

  • Janu Sirsasana – Seated forward fold with leg in tree
  • Marichyasana – Seated forward fold with bent leg
  • Paschimottansana – Seated forward idol
  • Uttanasana – Standing forward idol

Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises also improve the digestion process and aid good digestion. The exercises include:

  • Alternate Nostril Breathing Exercise
  • Ujjali Pranayama or Ocean Sounding Breath
  • Bashtrika Pranayama
