Ayurvedic Remedies for Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, which causes ulceration of inner lining of rectum and colon. The inflammation begins in the sigmoid colon and rectum. The condition rarely affects the small intestines.

People with pitta disorder mainly gets affected with ulcerative colitis disease. Excessive smoking, heat or sun exposure, indulging in argumentation easily, eating stale and sour foods, and alcohol can also cause this disease. There are various Ayurvedic remedies for ulcerative colitis which are discussed in this article.

Ayurvedic View of Ulcerative Colitis

This disease is the result of vitiation in the fire of pitta dosha which further causes a distortion in the blood or the rakta dhatu.

When this impure blood escapes from the body through the lower orifice, it is said to be Adhog rakta pitta.

Ayurvedic Cure for Ulcerative Colitis
Following are some of the Ayurvedic cures for ulcerative colitis:

Bilva – Take 1 to 2 teaspoon of powdered dried seeds of bilva twice or thrice along with buttermilk. Extract the pulp of fresh bilva fruit and take twice or thrice daily.

Lemon – The infusion prepared from lemon and taken on an empty stomach is another useful remedy.

Isabgol – Take isabgol mixed with curd and some roasted cumin seeds twice or thrice a day.

Nutmeg – Take ½ grams of nutmeg powder twice along with buttermilk.

Mango – A powder prepared from the dried flowers of the mango tree is recommended.

Neem – the juice is extracted from the juvenile leaves and flowers of neem is recommended.

Characteristic Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis

Loose motions with blood.

Low grade fever, pain in lower abdomen usually on left side, loss of hunger and loss of weight in long lasting cases.
