Bloating during Periods

Bloating is a condition of ill feeling and swollen belly region. Women suffer from this condition after or during their menstrual cycles. It is also accompanied with symptoms like restlessness, cramps, pain and mood changes. Bloating is a very irritating condition during periods though it is not serious. But it is treatable and the effect can be reduced to an extent. Following some simple measures help relieve from the condition. this below content gives a description of the causes of bloating during periods and some preventive steps.

Bloating during Period – Causes

The main reason why bloating occurs during periods is hormonal changes in the body that cause fluid retention. An average menstrual cycle is 28 days in which certain hormonal changes occur in the body. During a pregnancy or when an egg gets fertilized, these hormonal levels increase. Again these levels go down if the egg does not fertilize. And the body starts preparing for the coming period.

The uterus causes contraction of its walls by producing a chemical called prostaglandin. This contraction helps in getting rid of the lining. By this action, fluid retention takes place that is accompanied with bloating, swelling in some body parts, irritating weight gain, back pain and cramping. Women prone to drinking alcohol and smoking are at higher risk of bloating during periods.

Bloating during Periods – Some Preventive Measures

Bloating during or after periods is not a serious condition in women. There are some measures mentioned below that help in preventing the condition.

  • Avoid foods that are rich in salt content and processed foods as they lead to fluid retention in the body resulting in cramps. Instead take fresh fruits, vegetables, chicken and fish they reduce the risks of bloating.
  • Avoid consuming excess tea, caffeine and its products, chocolate. These products lead to bloating that result in cramping and pain in the abdominal region at periods.
  • Intake aloe vera pills if you suffer from bloating during periods. They help the body in processing water efficiently during periods. Intake foods rich in magnesium, calcium, vitamin B6 and A. They increase body fitness. Even consume vitamin supplements in serious conditions.
  • Herbs such as lemon balm, fennel, chamomile, ginger and peppermint are very effective remedies for digestive related problems. They avoid bloating or gas formation during menstrual cycle.
  • Another important remedy is to sweat excessively. Sweat removes excess water from the body.
