How to Beat Bloating – Top 5 Ways

Feeling puffy, bloated or gassy? Suffering from bloating after your meal? This feeling of tightness and fullness in the stomach can be very annoying. Bloating as such is not serious but it can be an indication of some digestive disorder. There are many reasons behind bloating. It can be caused due to factors such as foods, improper eating habits or hormonal changes. There are certain ways to get relieved from bloating and make you feel better.

  1. Consume more fluids. Some people believe that drinking more water can cause bloating. But this is merely a misconception. Drinking more water helps in flushing out the toxic and waste materials from the body. Thus, this provides a relief from constipation and bloating. Eat fruits such as watermelons and oranges as they contain 80 to 90% water.
  2. Consume foods rich in fibre as they fight against bloating feeling. Foods such as lentils, peas, seeds, whole grains, nuts and oats are rich in fibre. Also consume foods rich in potassium. Foods such as wholemeal pasta, roast potatoes, figs, apricots, raisins, soya flour and banana help to get rid of bloating.
  3. Bloating can also occur when you swallow in air while eating or drinking. This happens when you eat hurriedly, talk while eating, drink carbonated drinks in between meals or munching. Thus, chew the food with your mouth shut. Also chew it properly and take smaller amounts of food.
  4. Foods such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and beans induce the feeling of bloating. This is because they contain sugars that take more time for digestion. Minimize the intake of these foods and in case you happen to take, have only half a cup serving.
  5. If you suffer from severe bloating, seek professional help about the medications or supplements. The doctors may prescribe medications such as antihistamines, iron pills, antidepressants. These medications may cause severe bloating and constipation during initial stage but later provide relief.
