Emphysematous Cholecystitis – Causes and Symptoms of Emphysematous Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is a condition in which the gallbladder is inflammed. Gallbladder stores and passes the bile juice secreted by the liver into the intestine to aid digestion process. Emphysematous Cholecystitis is a bacterial infection of gallbladder and is considered to be rare form of cholecystitis. The bacteria leads to the formation of gas in the gallbladder that helps in diagnosing the condition from cholecystitis.

It is estimated that 1% of cholecystitis patients develop emphysematous cholecystitis. This shows that gas build-up due to bacterial infection is a rare gallbladder diseases.

Emphysematous Cholecystitis Causes

Emphysematous cholecystitis is caused as a result of gallbladder problems as well as other disease conditions. The main conditions that cause emphysematous cholecystitis include:

  • Gallstones

Gallstones are one of the causes for emphysematous cholecystitis. Studies reveal that about 30 – 80% patients show the presence of gallstones in their gallbladder. Gallstones block the bile flow to the intestine and thus the bile accumulates in the gallbladder leading to pain and inflammation of gallbladder.

  • Diabetes

When the diabetes in a person is uncontrollable, the gallbladder is affected causing emphysematous cholecystitis. The reason behind this is the diabetic patients have impaired immune system that makes them vulnerable to many infections. Studies show that about 30 – 54% of emphysematous cholecystitis patients are diabetic.

  • Insufficient Blood Circulation

When the blood flow is inadequate to the gallbladder, it may cause emphysematous cholecystitis. Gallbladder is supplied with oxygenated blood by the cystic artery. When this artery becomes stiff and thick due to any reason, it cannot deliver the gallbladder with sufficient blood. Hence, the gallbladder gets deprived of oxygen supply and creates a suitable environment for the growth of bacteria.

Emphysematous Cholecystitis Symptoms

Emphysematous cholecystitis develops rare but severe symptoms. At the initial stages, the patients will complain abdominal pain. Slowly, the pain spreads to the back area and shoulder. Other symptoms accompanied with the abdominal pain are nauseated feeling and loss of appetite.
