Crohn’s Diet Recipes

Crohn’s disease is a condition in which digestive tract is inflamed, including any part from mouth to anus. The condition primarily affects the small intestine making it difficult to absorb nutrients from food. It produces many symptoms like rectal bleeding, diarrhea, anemia, blood loss, abdominal pain and fever that could become fatal if untreated. The best way to treat Crohn’s disease is to follow a proper diet plan and recipes.

The following mentioned diet plan and the recipes would help the patient to get relieved from the condition. Moreover, the diet recipes are easy to prepare.

Crohn’s Diet Plan

A Crohn’s diet plan is basically a diet plan that includes food items to be taken which reduce the inflammation and thus, avoid aggravation of the condition. The diet should be a balanced diet that includes minerals, vitamins, essential nutrients and amino acids.

  • Take foods high in protein like eggs, lean meat and fish. They relieve the bowels from stress and minimize symptoms.
  • Avoid consuming whole grain products, dairy products, gas producing foods like beans, lentils, cabbage, legumes, onions, broccoli, raw fruits, vegetables and nuts.
  • Also avoid carbonated beverages, red meat and pork, alcohol, coffee and fat rich foods as they aggravate the symptoms.

Crohn’s Diet Recipes

Here are few recipes for Crohn’s disease that are very easy to prepare.

Pesto Pasta or Rice Salad


  • Dry pasta spirals or dry rice – 2 cups and 1 cup respectively
  • Cherry tomatoes – 24 small, cut in halves
  • Black olives – 20
  • Snow peas – 1 cup
  • Meat slices or skinless chicken or tuna chunks – 8 oz
  • Green leaves – 2 cups
  • Walnut pesto – 1 cup


Cook pasta or rice and keep it in a refrigerator for hour or so. Take a bowl and put tomatoes, cherries, snow peas, olives and meat slices in it. Mix walnut pesto (recipe mentioned below) with pasta or rice and all other ingredients. Serve it chilled.

Walnut Pesto Recipe

Blend together ¼ cup walnuts, 1 cup basil leaves, ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, ¼ cup canola oil and 2 cloves garlic in a food processor. Mix it in hot water if the mixture is too thick.

Salmon Steaks with Arugula and Capers


  • Salmon streaks – 4 oz, frozen
  • Spinach – 2 cups, chopped
  • Capers – 1 tablespoon (optional)
  • Pepper


Fry salmon along with canola oil in a frying pan. Fry it in such a way that both the sides are cooked. Add little black pepper, chopped spinach and 1 tablespoon capers to it and serve hot.

Whole Grain Pancakes with Apricot Ricotta


  • Plain yogurt – 2 cups
  • Whole grain flour – 1 cup
  • Baking soda – ¼ tablespoon
  • Milk powder – ¼ cup, skimmed
  • Sugar – 1 tablespoon
  • Egg – 1
  • Low fat milk – ½ cup
  • Canola margarine – 1 tablespoon
  • Ricotta cheese – 8 oz
  • Honey – ½ tablespoon
  • Apricots – 1 cup, canned


Take a large bowl and mix sugar, flour and skim milk powder in it. Add milk, egg and baking soda and mix the whole until it becomes smooth. Heat canola margarine in a skillet on a medium heat. Add ¼ cup of prepared batter into the skillet to form 2 pancakes. Cook well the pancakes bu turning both the sides. Make about 8 pancakes. Prepare apricot ricotta with honey and canned apricots. Serve the pancakes along with the apricot ricotta.

Along with these recipes, make a habit of drinking at-least 8 – 10 glasses of water everyday. Try having small 4-5 meals a day than having 3 large meals. These tips help the person with Crohn’s disease to lead a healthy life.

  1. I’m looking for recipes for someone who has Crohn’s however he doesn’t follow that diet!!! He will be coming to stay with me for a month or 2 and I want to make what he should have to eat. Then of course send him home with a book with all the food I’ve made for him during his visit!!! I think it might help with his condition.

    Can anyone help me?
