What are Digestive System Disorders

Digestive system disorders develop when there is a problem in the normal functioning of digestion. There are a wide range of digestive disorders and the most common digestive disorders are mentioned below.

Normally, the foods and liquids taken from the mouth are turned into nutrients and energy by the digestive system. It also eliminates the waste materials from the digested food. If there is any wrong functioning in this process, the food cannot be digested properly and would lead to any of the digestive disorder.

Most Common Digestive Disorders

Stomach Cancer

It is also called gastric cancer. It is observed that it mostly affects the individuals of age 60 – 70. It affected about 21,000 Americans During 2001 year. The risk factors that cause stomach cancer are bacterial infections and taking diet that consists of – salted meat and fish, smoked foods, foods low in fiber and rich in starch, beverages that contain nitrates and nitrites and pickled vegetables.

Colon and Rectal Cancer

It is also called colorectal cancer. It is the second leading cause for deaths in the U.S.A. It is a cancer of large intestine that is made up of colon and rectum. The risk of developing colorectal cancers has decreased due to polyp removal surgical techniques and sigmoidoscopic screening tests initiated by medical field.

Diverticular Disease

This is a disease of colon where small pouches develop from the wall of colon and get inflamed. It is a serious digestive disorder that is fatal.


Diarrhea is a condition in which there is an increased frequency in stools than compared to normal an individual passes. It is watery stool passage that is related to a viral or bacterial infection. It can also be a symptoms of intestinal or functional disorder.


It is also called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and is most common disorder. It happens when stomach acids flow back into the esophagus.

Gas in the Digestive Tract

Gas in the digestive tract develops when you swallow air during taking meals or during breakdown mechanism of some foods by bacteria in the colon. It is very embarrassing and uncomfortable for any individual to pass the gas.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

There are many disorders that fall under this type. Every disorder requires a doctor’s approach. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis come under this disorder.


It is an inflammation of liver and leads to liver dis-functioning. There are six types of hepatic disorders caused by different viral strains.

Lactose Intolerance

This is a type of digestive disorder in which the affected people lack lactase enzyme and thus, cannot digest lactose containing foods. Both adults and children affect from this condition. Digestive diseases and injuries to small intestine cause lactose intolerance. It is accompanied with symptoms such as bloating, cramping, nausea, diarrhea and gas.

Stomach and Duodenal Ulcers

Ulcers are the lesions found in the membranes of mucous or skin of stomach and duodenum. They form as a result of hydrochloric acid and pepsin present in the stomach and duodenum. Diet, stress and lifestyle are the factors that contribute to ulcer formation.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

It is an intestinal disorder that is accompanied with gas, cramps, changes in bowel movements and bloating in the affected individual. It is commonly referred as IBS.

These are just the common digestive disorders and there are many more disorders related to digestion. All these disorders require clinical care by a medical professional or a physician.
