Black Stool Treatment – Treatment of Black Stool

Black stool is mostly due to the result of bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, which is often referred to as gastrointestinal bleeding. The exact cause is determined through an endoscopic examination. The black color of the stool could be the result of various reasons –

  • Mixing of the blood with other digestive juices
  • Oxidation of the iron present (present in the hemoglobin) in the blood while passing through the ileum
  • Bleeding occurring in the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract, retaining the blood inside the body for a few while before excretion
  • Eating of dyed foods and drinks

If the causes are false melena and benign then there is nothing to worry. It is advisable to wait for a day and monitor if the signs reduces on it own. If no significant changes occur, then immediate medical consulting is advised.

Treatment of Black Stool –

After the identification of any grave causes leading to black stool, the following treatments must be done –

  • Bed rest must be advised. Avoid doing any strenuous physical activities.
  • Take good care of your skin.
  • Work strictly according to your physician’s guidelines.
  • Do not take aspirin, alcohol and other NSAIDs unless prescribed.

Causes of Black Stool –

Various causes have been identified leading to the occurrence of blackened stools. A few of them are given below –

  • Peptic ulcer is the most common cause of black or bloody stool.
  • Overdose of certain drugs can also cause bleeding or inflammation of the peptic region.
  • Cancer or tumors in the esophagus, stomach or small intestine can also allow blood with stool.
  • Inflammation in the stomach due to bacterial or viral action
  • Esophageal varices
  • Mesenteric vascular occlusion (black stool is a sign of this condition in association with fever, pain in the abdomen and vomiting typically).
