Digestive Disorders in Children

Most children suffer from digestive disorders. A proper treatment and diet can help get over this problem. But there are a few digestive problems which needs medical care. Children who mostly experience diarrhea, constipation or vomiting need immediate attention. This problem has to be assessed to determine if it is caused due to infection, virus or indigestion of food.

Causes Abdominal Pain in Children

There can be many causes of abdominal pain in children. Below can be a few causes of abdominal pain like:

  • Over eating
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Stress
  • Gastrointestinal virus
  • Consumption of soda
  • Food allergies
  • Food poisoning
  • Appendicitis

Digestion Disorders in Children

Constipation and Diarrhea

A major cause of digestive disorder in children is constipation and diarrhea. This usually results in abdominal cramping. When a person experiences hard movement of bowel it is termed as constipation. A lack of sufficient fiber in the diet can cause constipation. When one includes cereals, fruits, grains, vegetables it helps in curing constipation. Diarrhea can also be caused by bacteria or virus or due to excessive consumption of juice. Usually paediatricians recommend a diet for children that consists of rice, bananas toast and applesauce till a child is cured.

Excessive Gas and Bloating

Bloating and excess of gas is caused because of reasons like infection in the intestinal track, excess of swallowing of air or diarrhea. Food allergies like lactose can also cause this problem.

Vomiting and Nausea

Vomiting is also one of the reasons for digestive disorders in children. It can happen because of motion sickness, overeating or food poisoning. When a child overeats, he/she is most likely to vomit out the food because of indigestion. Children below the age of two may suffer from viral vomiting which may last for 24 to 48 hours. To avoid this situation, children should be fed small amounts of food.

Crohn’s Disease and Acid Reflux

Crohn’s disease and acid reflux are chronic digestive disorders. In such cases parents should take their children for an immediate test. Food allergies can also cause chronic problems in the abdomen.
