Side effects of Digestive Enzymes

Digestive enzymes are proteins that help in catalytic reactions in the body. This helps in breaking the complex molecules like fats, carbohydrates, and proteins into smaller molecules. There are three types of enzymes in the body called metabolic enzymes, digestive enzymes and food enzymes. There are side effects of digestive enzymes that may be experienced by the user. The side effects may be seen for some days after you start taking these enzymes. These side effects are the body’s way of getting adjusted to the dose of enzymes. Some of the side effects seen are:

  • Diarrhoea.
  • Stomach-ache
  • Bloating
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Gas
  • Dizziness

Other Side Effects

Some of the other common side effects seen after the intake of these digestive enzymes are:

  • These proteolytic digestive enzymes aid in digestion of proteins and destroy the lipases in the body. This can cause problems in the digestion of fats.
  • Children suffering from cystic fibrosis are administered pancreatic enzymes that damage the large intestines and increase the risk of suffering from fibrosing colonopathy.
  • The Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology Nutrition has reported that enteric-coated enzymes lead to the degenerative condition colonopathy.
  • Consult your doctor before the intake of digestive enzymes when you are using medications like warfarin an anticoagulant that is used to treat atrial fibrillation and venous thrombosis.
  • These enzymes combine negatively with the anticoagulant and cause adverse effects.

Hence, consult your doctor if you are using some medication or drug to avoid digestive enzyme side effects. Always use these enzymes under the supervision of a Health Care Professional, as they know which digestive supplement is best for you. Though these side effects are mild but, one should be cautious when using these enzymes.
