Foods that Cause Acid Reflux

Heartburn or acid reflux is the burning sensation that occurs in the stomach and the esophagus region. There are many foods that cause acid reflux and when you know the foods that cause acid reflux, one thing that you could do is to avoid these foods. This occurs when we eat lots of highly acidic foods and it becomes very difficult for the stomach to process the acid as this burning liquid flows back into the throat causing acid reflux.

Foods to Avoid if you get Acid Reflux

Here is a list of foods that result in acid reflux. Try to avoid these foods as much as possible. They include:

Fried Foods

Fried foods and foods that are high in trans-fats create a havoc on the stomach. These foods are heavy and slows the digestion process. Fried foods get stuck to the digestive process for long periods of time as it could create pressure in the stomach.

Processed Foods

Sweets like cookies and brownies also create an acidic environment int he stomach. So try to avoid all the enriched flour and refined white sugar as they have the highest acids and rank high in the acidic charts.


Although coffee is known to be laxative but, caffeine present in the coffee can lead to the production of a gastric acid which can cause acid reflux. So, avoid the intake of coffee.

Carbonated Drinks

Some of the drinks such as tonic water and soda pop can increase the pressure in the stomach which also increases the acidic response. Try to drink purified water that is not cold. Try to stay away from acidic juices like citrus fruit juices before especially going to bed.

Hot and Spicy Foods

Spicy and hot foods can increase the acidic content. So, avoid chilli peppers and spicy sauces. When you are dining at a Thai or Indian restaurant, remember to ask the waiter for no-spice food.


Alcohol dehydrates you and increases the acid in the stomach. This can make stay awake during the nights as the detoxes from the previous day. So, if you drink alcohol today then you can expect poor digestion or suffer acid reflux tomorrow.


Meat that has less fat is less acidic like the lean chicken and turkey. On the other hand, a juicy steak needs more of acids. So, limit the intake of meat to 2-3times a week and chew meat before you swallow it. Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables and do not eat more meat.


Milk creates excessive secretion of acids when you drink with a full stomach, which could make the symptoms more worse.
