Natural Remedies for Colitis

Colitis is the inflammation of the colon and is a result of prolonged inflammation and irritation that occurs in the lines of the colon. Colitis is the disorder of the colon that begins in the lower part and spreads upward. There are many Natural Remedies for Colitis, which can be followed even at home. Some of the symptoms are cramping pain in the abdomen along with increased urge to move the bowel. As it spreads upward, the frequency to pass stools increases, they are more watery along with rectal straining. When you lose more blood and fluid then you can observe some of the signs like fever, weakness, nausea, loss of appetite, anaemia and vomiting. So here are some of the natural remedies for colitis treatment.

Treating Colitis with Natural Remedies

Some of the natural therapeutic measures are:

  • Banana:

    You can take one or two ripened bananas every day for ulcerative colitis. As bananas are bland,smooth, mild laxative and easily digestible, these relieve the symptoms by promoting the healing process.

  • Buttermilk:

    Drink one glass of buttermilk daily because it is the remaining liquid after the fat has been removed after churning the curd.

  • Tender Coconut:

    Drink tender coconut daily as it is soothing to the mucous membrane of the colon.

  • Apple:

    Apples can be taken after steaming them as it helps in healing the lesions present in the colon. It also has high plenty of phosphorus and iron content.

  • Drumsticks:

    Colitis is treated using drumsticks where you can take a teaspoon of fresh drumstick juice along with equal quantity of honey and tender coconut water. This can be taken twice or thrice daily and can be used as a herbal treatment for treating colitis.

  • Rice:

    Rice has very low amounts of fiber content and therefore, it soothes the lesions in the colon. You can mix rice with ripe banana and buttermilk. This can be taken twice a day and this is a highly nutritious diet.

  • Wheat Grass:

    Juice extracted from wheat grass can be used as an enema as it helps in the process of detoxification. This procedure involves giving enema with lukewarm water. After you wait for 20 minutes, 90 – 120 ml of this juice can be given and it should be retained for fifteen minutes. This is useful in treating colitis effectively.

Diet for Colitis

  • Diet also plays a major role in the treatment of colitis. So, here are some of the diet plans that are recommended by people suffering from colitis.
  • It is recommended to juice fast for five days and you can drink papaya juice, carrot juice and raw cabbage juice. These are found to be beneficial for colitis patients.
  • Citrus juice should be avoided.
  • You can have rice, steamed vegetables and home made cottage cheese.
  • Once you have finished the five days of juice fast then you can start the intake of small and frequent meals that are steamed or soft cooked rice, vegetables, porridge and ripened fruits like papaya and banana.
  • You can also eat sprouted grains and seeds, raw vegetables and wholemeal bread. These can be added slowly to your diet after 10 days.
  • The food that you eat must be chewed properly and eaten slowly.
  • Foods that are to be excluded are highly seasoned foods white flour products, white sugar, strong tea, alcoholic beverages and salted foods.

Other Colitis treatments

Some of the other treatments given are:

  • During the period of juice fast, the bowels can be cleansed with warm water enema.
  • Buttermilk enema can be taken two times in a week as it soothes and helps in the installing the useful flora and bacteria in the colon.
  • Avoid stress and take complete bed rest.
  • Complete bed rest is necessary, avoid stress.
