Gastritis Symptoms – What are the Symptoms of Gastritis

Gastritis is the irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining and is a condition that has many causes. This is a disease of the common people because it is experienced by almost all the people at some time or the other. The common gastritis symptoms are pain and discomfort in the upper part of the abdomen. It can be sudden like acute gastritis or a chronic one where you suffer frequently. One of the example of acute gastritis is that it is usually followed after the use of certain foods, drinks or medications like alcohol or aspirin. The chronic gastritis is caused due to Helicobacter pylori that infects the stomach.

Symptoms of gastritis does not correspond to the physical changes. Some of the symptoms are:

  • Pain is usually in the upper middle part of the abdomen.
  • Sometimes you feel that the pain goes straight as it moves from the abdomen to the back.
  • People use certain terms like gnawing, aching, burning or sore to explain the pain. However the pain is stabbing, sharp or cutting.

Other Symptoms

Some of the other symptoms are :

  • Bloating.
  • Feeling of fullness or burning sensation on the upper portion of the abdomen.
  • Nausea and vomiting and the vomit is green or yellow, blood streaked or clear depending on the severity of stomach irritation or inflammation.
  • Belching, that does not relieve pain.

Severe Gastritis

In severe cases, bleeding can occur inside the stomach and some of the symptoms include:

  • Bowel movements that are sticky, foul smelling and dark in color.
  • Vomiting large amounts of blood
  • Severe stomach pain or chest pain
  • Shortness of breath or feeling faint
  • Sweating, pallor or rapid heart beat

When to see a doctor ?

Gastritis is something that has been experienced by many people and most cases, the intensity is short and may not need medical care. But if you experience the signs and symptoms for more than a week then you need to consult your doctor. If you have blood vomitings or bleeding stools then consult your doctor immediately to avoid further worsening of the condition.
