Preventing Food Poisoning – How Can we Prevent Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is also called food borne illness, which is a distressing disease and sometimes can lead to life-threatening situations. It is the most common problem that occurs in millions of people in the U.S. Preventing food poisoning is an important task because people can die depending upon the severity of the infection. Here are some of the general guidelines for preventing food poisoning.

Follow these simple measures for preventing food borne illness:

  • Food from animal sources like eggs, meat and dairy products should be cooked properly or pasteurized. You can also use a thermometer.
  • Avoid eating undercooked or raw eggs or meat and check expiry dates on meats before preparing and even before purchasing.
  • You need select and carefully prepare fish and especially, shell fish to make sure the quality and freshness of the products you purchase.
  • If you are eating in a restaurant then if you are served with an undercooked egg or meat then you should not eat it, instead send it back and ask for a new plate.
  • Do not contaminate other foods in the kitchen from the drippings or juices of poultry, raw fish, eggs or shell fish.
  • Do not leave poultry, eggs, milk, meats or seafood for long periods at the room temperature and refrigerate properly the left over food and those foods that are prepared in advance.
  • Wash your hands, knives and cutting boards with warm water to jot water and antibacterial soap after handling poultry, eggs, raw meat or seafood. It is always recommended not to use cutting boards that are made of wood as it is hard to clean them.
  • Avoid the intake of unpasteurized milk or even foods prepared from unpasteurized milk.
  • Do not thaw foods at room temperature instead thaw foods in the refrigerator and use them promptly. Once they are thawed completely, do not refreeze the foods.
  • Wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly before you eat and avoid the intake of alfalfa sprouts as their safety cannot be assured. There are many methods to decontaminate sprouts and alfalfa seeds.
  • Drink pasteurized cider or juice, but some of the commercial juices that are sold at room temperatures are pasteurized. This is usually indicated over the label on the bottle.
  • Be careful of proper home-canning procedures because on safe home-canning can be obtained from the U.S Department of Agriculture or from the country extension services.
  • If you are ill with vomiting or diarrhea, never prepare foods for other members of the family, especially, for infants, elderly and people with very weakened immune system as they are more susceptible to infections.
  • After handling birds, reptiles or after contacting pet or human feces, wash your hands with soap or antibacterial hand wash and you can use warm water.
  • For infants, mother’s milk is the safest for them as it can prevent food borne diseases and other illnesses.

High Risk

Some of the high risk people for food poisoning are people with weakened immune system, infants, pregnant woman, and the elderly. These people should avoid certain things like:

  • If you belong to the high risk category then you should avoid cheeses like feta, blue-veined, Mexican-style cheese, briet. You can opt for processed cheese, cream cheese, hard cheese and yogurt as they are safe.
  • Foods should be cooked till they are steaming hot, especially the foods that are leftover or that which can be eaten like hot dogs.

Pregnant women and those people with weakened immune system can avoid these foods or reheat foods thoroughly before eating. If you follow these simple safety measures then it is sure that you can prevent food poisoning. But, if you suffer from severe food poisoning even after taking these safety measures then consult a doctor for the correct diagnosis as this can help you know the exact cause for food poisoning.
