What is gastric bypass surgery?

A gastric bypass surgery is a weight loss surgery. People who undergo this surgery feel heavy even though they have consumed a little quantity of food, thus allowing them to consume less, there by cut the intake of calories which in turn would help reduce weight. This surgery is also referred to as

Roux en-Y surgery

What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?:

People who suffer from severe obesity which could actually threaten their lives are suggested a gastric bypass. As part of the surgery, the stomach s rearranged into a much smaller upper pouch and a larger lower pouch while keeping both the pouches connected to the small intestine through rearrangement.

The smaller pouch then enables the food consumed to bypass a part of the small intestine not allowing the small intestine to absorb as many calories as before. The small pouch only enables less food storage, there by causing the person to feel full and consume less.

When is This Surgery Done?:

As mentioned above, life threatening obesity is the major reason for this surgery to be suggested. People who have a BMI (body mass index) of more than 40 should have to lose weight in order to eliminate any fatal consequences. Also, if other weight reducing techniques have failed to show any effect on your BMI, the gastric bypass surgery can be done.

The following prerequisites are observed before performing the surgery-

  • if the person has been obese for at least 5 years
  • no associated problems with alcohol
  • no history of untreated psychiatric disorders
  • if between the ages 18 and 65

After the Surgery:

The following changes can be observed and must be made after the surgery –

  • food consumption would reduce phenomenally
  • food has to be consumed efficiently (proper chewing and swallowing), else problems like vomiting and pain would occur
  • foods containing sugars must be stopped
  • drinking after eating for at least half hour would not be possible
  • vitamin and mineral supplements have to be taken regularly as the intestine would not get much food to absorp

Although this surgery is a very complex and hugely risky one, many people have had positive outcomes of the surgery. But, a gastric bypass surgery can often lead to complications like dumping syndrome and malnutrition. So, I guess it is clear now to
