Treating Esophagus Disorders

Esophagus disorders

can either be acute or chronic. But one thing with either of them is that they can be extremely discomforting and painful. The esophagus is usually not felt by us much, until it begins to hurt. There are several conditions of the esophagus that can cause trouble. Depending on these conditions the treatment would vary.

Treating Esophagus Disorders:

Before actually being prescribed medications for your discomfort in the esophagus, an X-ray would be necessary to check exactly which part of the esophagus is causing the trouble and what disorder you are suffering from.

Medicines for GERD:

If the doctor identifies that you are suffering from GERD (gastroesophagal reflux disease), antacids will be the first choice of treatment. In people suffering from GERD, the stomach acids enter the esophagus and can damage the lining of the esophagus.

  • Over the counter antacids like

    Tagamet

    or

    Prilosec

    can be helpful in providing temporary relief by neutralising the stomach acids.

  • Proton pump inhibitors are more potent as they can suppress the stomach acids. But, they can only be bought on prescription.

  • Zantac

    , a H2 receptor blocker is also helpful for reducing the stomach acid production.

Although these medications provide relief, they cannot however cure the damage that the esophagus has already suffered.

  • In case the problem is at the esophagal sphincter, prokinetic inhibitors are prescribed to speed up the process of emptying.
  • If the esophagus is bleeding (esophagitis), antibiotics are used to stop the bleeding and kill the infections that have led to it.
  • People suffering from dyspahgia (swallowing problems) are also treated by medications.

Self-Care:

Apart from medications, one should also exercise a little self-care in order to help the situation. It is important to keep any other medical conditions like blood pressure and cholesterol under check along with stress levels as these can have an effect the existing esophagus problems.

  • Elevated blood pressure or cholesterol are known to cause peptic ulcers which can worsen the esophagus problems.
  • Even elevated stress levels can adversely affect the esophagus by influencing the stomach acid levels which ultimately could damage the lining of the throat as well. Exercising is the best way in which one can prevent stress levels from elevating.
