IBD Diet – What’s the Importance?

or inflammatory bowel diseases’ diet is something which is not specific and is not the same for all the patients. As such, this diet is not recognized by any medical community and nor are the conditions ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease caused by certain food. But, there is a certain chance that frequent intestinal flare-ups are possible in people suffering from these diseases due to certain foods.

IBD Diet:

People who suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases suffer from diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and fever. As you can see, diarrhea is one of the major symptoms of this disease. So, the food taken is not completely absorbed by the intestines which would eventually lead to malnutrition.

At the same time, loss of appetite also would not help. So, it is important that the body receives a proper healthy diet to substitute for the lost or the missing nutrients.

Trial-and-Error Diet:

As such, there is no prescribed diet to all the patients suffering from these intestinal inflammatory diseases. Each individual suffering from these conditions should develop a diet plan with the help of his/her physician. But, this diet is not something static and is pretty dynamic.

This is because trying to substitute for the lost nutrients without scarring the intestines can be a challenge. So, based on the patient’s responses to a particular diet plan, the doctor may either choose to stick to the plan or alter it.

General Guidelines:

Despite diet plan being a dynamic one, a few guidelines can be followed while trying to develop the plan. Let us look at a few foods that are required and a few that are not suitable.

  • Foods rich in fiber are recommended when there are no flare ups, but during acute episodes of the diseases, it is best to stick to a low fiber diet. Especially insoluble fibers, which are present in tomatoes, nuts, onions, celery, cucumber, whole grains et are best avoided. While soluble fibers present in rice, pasta, barley, potatoes, mangoes, avocados should be preferred.
  • Foods which produce gas (cabbage, onions, peas, broccoli, carbonated drinks et.) should be avoided. Fast foods which are greasy and fatty also produce gas and should be avoided.
  • Beverages like alcohol and caffeine rich drinks should also be avoided.
  • Raw fruits and vegetables are also not suggestible.
  • Using flax seed oil or fish oil can help the condition.

IBD diet

is not an alternative to cure the disease, but suitable dietary changes can at least prevent frequent intestinal flare ups.
