What is Salmonella Enterocolitis?

Salmonella Enterocolitis

gets its name from the bacteria causing it. This organism affects the inner walls of the small intestine and causes infection there. It is a disease which is primarily transmitted through food.

Food poisoning from contaminated food and water is the main reason. The cooking vessels and equipment as well as cooking conditions when contaminated from unhygienic environment could lead to this disease.

How is Salmonella Enterocolitis Caused?

  • Eating raw food or dishes involving raw meat like sushi , beef carpaccio etc increases the chances of getting it. Improperly washed and harvested raw vegetables and salads are also responsible for it.
  • Cooked food kept out at room temperature for more than 2 hours could lead to this disease. Cooking conditions and storage of food is to be kept in mind.
  • Eating chicken daily.
  • Travelling to an area where there was an outbreak of this infection.
  • From any family member who got it recently.
  • Reptile pets like lizards, iguana, snakes and turtles could be carriers of the bacterium.
  • Weak immune system would increase the probability of getting it.
  • Being in a hospital or an institution with public sanitation facilities.

Symptoms of Intestinal Infection

  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Fever
  • Vomit
  • Nausea
  • Body Pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Dehydration

What are the Diagnostic Examinations to Detect it?

  • Stool culture

    – A detailed culture of a stool sample would reveal the presence of it.

  • CBC (Complete Blood Count) and Culture

    – Complete blood work is also needed to confirm the diagnosis.

  • Febrile/Cold Agglutinins

    – This test is used to detect the presence of certain antibodies related to the ailment.


  • Firstly, dehydration often caused by diarrhea in this condition is treated by using hydrating electrolyte solutions either through mouth or it is injected in veins.
  • Treatment of this infection is mostly done by administering antibiotics.
  • Medicines to reduce the nausea are also given.
  • Body aches and pains are healed with medicines like acetaminophen and Ibuprofen(pain killers).
  • If one is on diuretics (urine inducing drugs) the medicine should be stopped immediately.
  • Diet modifications are needed during this infection. Food with high iron content like banana, rice etc are suggested which would help in solidifying the stools.

Prevention of Salmonella Enterocolitis

  • Keeping away from dishes requiring raw vegetables, fish, meat and eggs.
  • Washing hands every time one handles poultry or eggs.
  • Keeping utensils and cooking equipment uncontaminated by washing them properly with a good dish washing formula under running water.
  • Food should be properly refrigerated.
  • Bacteria multiplies rapidly between 40 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. So this temperature range should be avoided while storing food.
