Top 8 Causes of Colon Cancer

Colon Cancer

is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United states of America. The human colon is a muscular tube which forms an essential part of the digestive system. It is about 4 feet in length extending from the small bowel to the anus. The colon is entrusted with doing the essential functions of absorbing nutrients from food, adding mass to the the fecal material by absorbing liquids and to control and manage the defecation of feces from the body. So when cancerous masses appear on the colon, proper functioning of the entire colon is hampered.

Let us have a look at the eight major causes of colon cancer.

1. Age:

Degeneration of tissues and muscles caused by age often makes one susceptible to the said cancer. This particular cancer has a higher incidence of affecting individuals aged over 50. Hence, regular colon screening beyond the age of 50 is a must.

2. Diet:

A persistent diet which is low in fiber, high in saturated fats and cholesterol like that coming from meat and full fat dairy is most definitely linked to this cancer. A diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables, pulses, legum and lean animal protein is rcommended. Antioxidant rich fruits and vegetable are believed to have cancer preventing properties.

3. Lack of Exercise:

Lack of physical activity is linked with this disease. Exercise prevents us from being overweight. Obesity, especially abdominal obesity is thought to increase the risks of this cancer. So regular exercise and keeping oneself at a healthy weight is a must.

4. Diabetes:

Insulin resistance in diabetics may increase the risks of this disease. The mismanagement of blood glucose levels in diabetics due to insulin dependancy can lead to the development of this disease.

5. Medical History:

The presence of benign polyps, adeniomas, hemarrhoids can make one susceptible to develop carcinogenic masses and lesions later on. Inflammatory Bowel disease is another condition which if not treated well could lead to the disease.

6. Genetics:

The genetic map you inherit have also a lot to do with the propensity to develop this particular cancer. 25% of the occurrence of this cancer could be linked to genetic reasons. Inheriting the mutated gene as in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) and heredity non polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) are good examples of the genetic connection of the cancer concerned.

7. Smoking:

Smoking has always been associated with increasing the risks of developing cancer. Inhaled or swallowed tobacco may cause the carcinogens to reach the colon. Smoking is also thought to increase the size of colon polys. The bigger the size of the polyp the greater the chances are that they would turn cancerous.

8. Ethnicity and race:

The rate of people getting affected by colorectal cancer and dying from it varies by race and ethnicity. Black People have the highest incidence of colorectal cancer followed by whites. Hispanics and Asians would be third and fourth in the list respectively.
